Access to Finance Specialist - Tanzania Horticulture Value Chain Activity - MBOGA MATUNDA Project POSITION DESCRIPTION:

CARANA Corporation, together with consortium of partners, is bidding an anticipated upcoming USAID funded Tanzania Horticulture Value Chain Activity - MBOGA MATUNDA project. The purpose of the resulting contract for the MBOGA MATUNDA Program is to acquire technical services to increase the competitiveness and inclusiveness of the horticulture subsector, while improving the nutritional status of Tanzanians by: (1) scaling improved technologies and practices that lead to the increased productivity of smallholders, including large numbers of women and youth, in targeted commodities;
(2) scaling market system models able to reach large numbers of direct and indirect beneficiaries, including vulnerable populations, while increasing trade for targeted commodities; and (3) strengthening the overall capacity of the industry.

Responsibilities:

The Access to Finance Specialist will help increase the availability and affordability of financial services for individuals, as well as micro, small and medium enterprises in the Tanzania horticultural sector, in addition to promoting the inclusion of women and youth participation. Our goal is to provide broad-based financial services to individuals (such as credit, savings, payments and insurance products) and to promote growth and employment generation by supporting sustainable lending to small and medium enterprises.

Specific duties include:
• Facilitate access to finance for farm groups and agricultural SMEs by working with banks to help them develop new finance and investment packages for SMEs.
• Identify solutions to value chain (VC) finance in horticulture.
• Educate SMEs involved in horticulture on how to apply for these packages from financial institutions.
• Collaborate with financial institutions to prepare financial solutions best suited for agricultural VCs in high-value horticulture.
• Provide training to banks and other financial institutions on lending to the agricultural sector and risk managements of agricultural portfolios.
• Develop financial proposals with impact investors.

Qualifications:
• A Bachelor’s degree in Business, Economics or Development Studies is required. An MBA or Master’s degree in a related field is desirable.
• Proven track record of providing more accessible access to finance to SMEs in developing countries;
• 10 years of progressive experience in investment facilitation in agriculture and horticulture in transition economies.
• Experience working with banks and other financial institutions in reforming and developing new investment packages for agribusiness
• Capacity to effectively resolve conflict and overcome resistance to change;
• Prior Tanzania work experience on donor funded agricultural projects preferred
