Private Sector Driven Agriculture Internship





    Job Description


    RTI International has a USAID/Rwanda Private Sector Driven Agriculture Growth Internship opening for the upcoming summer 2017(June-August) within the International Development Group•s Food Security and Agriculture Practice. This internship will provide the successful prospect a mentored learning experience, and the opportunity to expand his/her classroom knowledge and skills within a professional setting. The Rwanda Private Sector Driven Agricultural Growth (PSDAG) Project is a five-year Feed the Future project funded by USAID and implemented by IRG, a subsidiary of RTI International. The project was created in line with Government of Rwanda (GoR) targets and aims to develop a strategic partnership between the Rwandan public and private sectors to improve
    the conditions for investment mobilization and to create more economic opportunity for smallholder farmers through increased value chain market integration.• The project•s principal objectives include: - Objective 1: Assisting the Government of Rwanda (GoR) to attract and increase private sector investment; and• - Objective 2: Facilitating increased private sector investment by upgrading agricultural value chains PSDAG aims to increase smallholder incomes by promoting private sector investments that contribute to the Government of Rwanda Vision 2020 aim of •transforming agriculture into a market-oriented, competitive, and high value sector.• PSDAG uses a market facilitation approach to increase private sector investment, and facilitate increased private sector investment in upgrading agricultural value chains. The PSDAG program develops strategic partnerships with the private sector. The PSDAG Value Chain Competitiveness Fund (VCCF) is a grant fund designed to leverage private sector investment by reducing risk in investing in innovative or new technologies or capacity building.•
    This internship, which will provide hands-on work experience in the development sector, requires the successful prospect to have a solid foundation in economic theory and strong quantitative skills; experience with data collection, econometric analysis, data base management experience; and good communications skills. The intern will participate in a wide variety of discrete projects involving agriculture, markets and trade, environmental and land management, and other related topics.
    The intern will report directly to the Senior Value Chain Specialist, or designee, and will work collaboratively with other PSDAG staff in contributing to the achievement of project objectives.•Responsibilities include, but are not limited to: - Support the Objective 2 team in designing and implementing data-driven value chain upgrading strategies, addressing production, post-harvest, processing and marketing priorities through market-driven sustainable approaches. - Provide technical support and training to the Objective 2 team for assigned projects, building the capacity of long-term PSDAG staff in economic and quantitative analysis.
    - The intern will work to finalize the focus and scope of work with the PSDAG Chief of Party, and specific tasks and research subjects may be determined based on the interests and experience of the successful prospect, but could include: - Financial and social impact analysis of the PSDAG Value Chain Competitiveness Fund investment grant fund performance; - Support for communications and marketing materials, documenting the achievements of PSDAG private and public sector partnerships.
    - Land use optimization analysis and tools for agriculture activities (livestock and produce). The tool developed will assist both the private and public sectors to determine the best combination of agriculture activities to use on land demarcated for agriculture. - Perform other tasks, as assigned by the Chief of Party or Deputy Chief of Party. • Additional Information This unpaid internship, located at our Kigali, Rwanda office, requires the successful intern to receive academic credit, fulfill an academic program requirement, or be externally funded. The internship re internship requires a minimum commitment of 320 hours, beginning June 2017 through August 2017. Hours are flexible during business hours (9.00am-6.00pm, Monday through Friday).•
    Kindly apply online by submitting your resume and cover letter, in one PDF document.• Qualifications - Recent degree recipient (within the past calendar year), or currently enrolled graduate student, who studied or is studying one of the following fields: business, economics, agricultural development, or related field. - Work experience and/or coursework in the field of business, economics, social impact investment, agricultural development, financial analysis is required. - Familiarity with private-sector engagement, agricultural development and policy issues in the African context, especially Rwanda, is desired. - High-performing educational background (based on GPA). - Self-starter with the demonstrated ability to work independently or as part of a team to assist the project achieve its objectives. - Strong written communication and Microsoft Excel skills required. - Demonstrated leadership experience in work, volunteer positions, clubs, etc. - Fluency in English required, knowledge of French is an asset.• - Eligibility to receive academic credit, fulfill an academic program requirement, or receive external funding.•
