OVERVIEW OF THE FUNCTIONS OF THE POST
I. Background
The position is within the Communication and Information (CI) Sector, building on UNESCO’s work in Tanzania which aims to
strengthen policies and capacities for the development of independent and pluralistic media; improve media access to ICT;
forging the links for increased citizen’s participation in rural communities through increased access to information; and
building a conducive environment for media freedom and pluralism.

Within the framework of the SDC funded project “Empowering Local Radios with ICTs for the Promotion of Rural Citizens
Participation in Democratic Discourse and Development” UNESCO works to support community radios and the Tanzania
Development Information Organization (TADIO), a community based media network in Tanzania, by addressing capacity gaps
and strengthening efforts for sustainability of Community Radios through entrepreneurship and income generation; capacity
building on ICTs and management; support to improve quality and inclusive programming. The project will also ensure
quality, timely and relevant UNESCO contributions to the Delivering as One UN policy through UNDAP II in the United
Republic of Tanzania (URT).
Participation in Democratic Discourse and Development” UNESCO works to support community radios and the Tanzania
Development Information Organization (TADIO), a community based media network in Tanzania, by addressing capacity gaps
and strengthening efforts for sustainability of Community Radios through entrepreneurship and income generation; capacity
building on ICTs and management; support to improve quality and inclusive programming. The project will also ensure

The Media Training Coordinator will work under the direct supervision of the Project Manager and under the overall
authority of the Head of Office and Representative (HoO). He / She will contribute to the regular and daily exchanges about
the development of the project to the National Professional Officer for Communication and Information (NPO CI).

II. Duties and requirements
Under the overall authority of the Head of the UNESCO Office in Dar es Salaam and direct supervision of the Project Manager
and in close collaboration with the Regional Office and Programming, Monitoring and Coordination Unit of the Executive
Office of the Communication and Information Sector, the incumbent will undertake the following tasks and responsibilities:

1. Develop training and mentorship plans, design specific trainings and mentorship sessions, facilitate training and
mentorship sessions to Media outlets
Provide expertise in the development of manuals and materials to train Community Media, Specially Community
Radios, within planned Media Training Programmes of the SDC funded project;
Coordinate the training / mentorship and peer learning sessions with M&E officer so that all expected targets
defined in the project are met and all indicators addressed;
Advise on strategy and entry points in media related training / mentorship interventions aligned with UNESCO’s
mandate in on-going and planned interventions, currently including the Prevention of Violent Extremism and
Election Support projects; and other future projects and initiatives;
Elaborate and revise all training and mentorship reports on Media training activities aligning them with the M&E
framework by working closely with the M&E officer

Provide inputs to the participation in thematic and working groups organised by the donor’s community;

4. Support in the visibility of UNESCO’s activities in Tanzania by contributing to internal and external communication
channels
Contribute to draft the press releases linked to Media Development Project undertaken, especially the SDC
project for mainstream media;
Contribute to the efforts to publicize and communicate UNESCO SDC Project results at all levels including the
submission of articles for the UNESCO newsletter and social media sites, as well as, quality press releases.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
EDUCATION
Advanced university degree (Masters or equivalent) in in journalism, communication, international affairs and / or
Development or related areas.

WORK EXPERIENCE
At least 2 years of relevant work experience in implementing and coordinating capacity building sessions for CSO and / or
Media outlets, Public Information activities;
