Job Description

You might be our new International Director!
The International Director (ID) leads the International Cluster which consists of three teams: International Programme and Policy, Learning and Capacity, and Youth Organizing and Activism. Each team has a strong team lead who refers directly to the ID.
The ID is responsible for leading and developing our international programs and secure their funding. Our programme framework is designed to contribute to our Dual Perspective on Development which brings together partnership-based development programming and innovative and agile support to youth organizers, activists and movements. Our programming approach has several modalities including:
  • Partnership based rights-based development programming with our sister organizations in the global ActionAid federation.
  • Global policy programmes focused on thematic priorities such as Participatory Democracy and Youth representation; Tax and Gender Responsive Public Services; Economic opportunities and decent work for youth; Strengthened Rights and Resilience in protracted Crises and Disasters.
  • Establishing and running of Global Platforms, a network of youth hubs for training and activism.
  • Placing and supporting a network of advisors and inspirators through People for Change.
  • Supporting learning and innovation across the ActionAid federation and offering courses and training at our centre in Arusha, Tanzania, and on digital platforms.
All our international work is implemented in partnership with civil society organisations and actors at all levels. Our common approach in all countries is that people who are subjected to discrimination and marginalization must be at the centre of their own struggle for rights and social justice. We have close links with local society in each country and work to ensure that young people organize together and shift power to strengthen their fight for rights, justice and dignity.
Duties and responsibilities

Strategic development and innovation of AADKs international work.
Your main purpose will be that our International programmes and relationships are future-fit: Relevant, innovative and in alignment with sustainable development goals and trends. We expect you to:
  • Take lead and facilitate the growth and diversification of funds, expansion of partnerships and program growth of AADKs international work and funding for Hum/Dev nexus programs.
  • Read the landscape for upcoming trends and opportunities to support ActionAid partner countries, civil society organisations, social movements, activists and other relevant stakeholders.
  • Set clear strategic directions and priorities for AADK’s international work, incl. further develop AADKs approach and work with innovation and digitalization.
  • Clearly communicate the strategic direction of AADK international work within and beyond the organization.
The International Cluster
You will ensure that the international cluster leadership team delivers on strategic priorities. This includes:
  • Effective Cluster leadership e.g. development of the cluster’s culture and coordination among teams (incl. common systems and approaches).
  • Clear mandates and delegation within the Cluster for the development of budget, planning, outcomes and implementation.
  • Support and coach of team leaders including development of staff capacities and teamwork.
  • Support in HR leadership and organizational issues when required (with support of HR professionals).
  • Further development of digital solutions in AADK international work.
Stakeholder Relations
You will be responsible to maintain and develop strong relations and cooperation with key stakeholders and donors e.g. ActionAid International, Danida, EU and others. You will:
  • Build relationships and represent AADK externally in different networks, alliances and platforms including Danida and ActionAid International.
  • Explore, expand and actively engage in relevant forums, platforms and international institutions/agencies, representing AADK interests and approach.
  • Lead strategic negotiations and main directions for applications with new donors; and deliver strategic agreements with AADK’s main stakeholders and management herof.
  • Represent AADK and its strategy in the Partnership Board of our Tanzanian Training centre (TCDC); and ensure strategic monitoring, follow up of and support to TCDC ‘s lead.
Leadership Team
The Leadership Team is composed of four Cluster Directors and the Secretary General. The main purpose of the leadership team is to enable others to achieve our strategic goals in the face of uncertain circumstances.
As part of the Leadership Team, you will contribute to co-ordination and shared leadership within the Team, so that clusters and teams coordinate and prioritize efforts and actions in accordance with AADK strategy, agreements and resources. You will:
  • Contribute to alignment and prioritization of efforts among the different clusters at both thematic, organizational and leadership culture levels,
  • Take responsibility for cross organizational initiatives; and nurture a unique organizational culture of courage, professionalism, collaboration, feedback and accountability, developing leadership in others.
  • Participate in shared leadership team decisions and strategy development.
  • Support leadership team colleagues and the AADK Board.
Who are we looking for?

To fill this position, our minimum requirements are:
  • Significant experience of working in the global South and managing partner-led program implementation.
  • Strategic knowledge and experience from civil society and the humanitarian sector.
  • Successful people management experience at a senior level as well as curiosity and interest around new management and leadership cultures and forms.
  • Skilled with strong interpersonal, relationship building and diplomatic ability.
  • Able to handle organizational and program complexity.
  • Strong and respectful organizational and personal negotiator.
  • Strategic in your communication and interaction - with the ability to communicate visionary ideas and make them concrete.
We strongly expect that you can demonstrate:
  • Confidence and experience from thematic areas of Youth, Human Rights Based Approach and Humanitarian.
  • Knowledge and experience working with organizing, with peoples’ organizations and movements.
  • Proved success and ability to balance and connect an activist approach with long-term structured development and program work.
  • Openness and proven ability to manage and facilitate innovative processes, test new ways of working and with a curiosity around digital opportunities and solutions at both a strategic and tactical level.
  • Indignation and political analysis with courage and integrity.
  • Strong sense and ability to manage and balance organizational structures and relationships in an international federation.

You have a sense of purpose and can challenge existing procedures when needed. You are visionary and led by an innovative, positive and strategic mindset that sees opportunities rather than limitations - for you and for others.
