    Job Description

    RTI’s International Education (IE) Division is supporting education development around the world by strengthening education policy, management and practice in order to achieve measurable improvement in teaching and learning. From our well-established reputation in education system strengthening, to innovative work in early grade assessment and
    learning, RTI is improving education quality, relevance and efficiency through implementation of projects funded by USAID, DFID, DFAT, the World Bank, Google and other donors and clients. USAID/Uganda Literacy Achievement and Retention Activity (LARA) is a five-year USAID funded initiative implemented by RTI International.• The overarching purpose of• the• Literacy• Achievement• and Retention Activity• is to improve the reading skills of primary-grade• learners in government• schools• in Uganda• through• the• scale• up• of• the• EGR• methodology and ensure retention in early grades through prevention of school-related and gender-based violence. The activity aims to improve literacy by supporting interventions that (l) improve key aspects of•
    reading skills in both English and 3 of the 12 selected local languages in the early primary grades, and (2) improve the year-to-year retention of learners in the primary grades by ensuring that the school environment for learners is safe from any form of abuse. Position overview • The Communications Specialist - Materials is responsible for the development of communication materials and process mapping to support the activity•s goals of improving early grade reading and reducing school-related gender-based violence.• S/he will develop concepts for communications materials, build capacity of local partners in printing
    production, and lead the processes for materials production. S/he will assist with technical specifications and forecasting communication needs of the project. This position is based in Kampala, Uganda. • Duties and Responsibilities • - Lead project manager for material production, specifically the teaching and learning materials for Result 1 (EGR and supplementary reading materials) and Results 2(Journeys) and their respective Facilitator Guides - Defining planning timelines, assigning responsibilities, weekly updates, and other tasks as needed to keep printing schedule on track - Support design, layout, and proofing - Advise on procurement of printers and communication partners to ensure brand and budget is maintained through quality production - Manage and maintain graphic files, including primers, company logos, photos and art - Support the activity•s Social and Behavior Change Communication (SBCC) campaign - Support M&E to develop innovative and visual design for presentation of research data and project reports - Support revisions to existing TLM (Pre-reading Teacher Guide and Pupil Book • combined guide) - Support revisions to existing materials, including Journeys series materials and Facilitator•s Guide - Develop concepts for and design communication material, including newsletters, brochures, annual reports, invites, pockets and posters as
    needed.• - Build the capacity of staff and local partners to proof check, design, and layout, amend, compile and procure printing for future early grade educational materials. - Support staff with events and field visits • organizational support and recording the events with photographs and video where appropriate. - Train staff to take engaging photos and produce reports for the project. - Participate in project review meetings and monitoring and evaluation where suitable. Qualifications - Bachelor•s degree in graphic design, communication or relevant field. - Minimum of six years• experience of relevant experience, including experience in graphic design. - Experience quoting and managing print jobs, as well as working with printers and procurement. - Good working knowledge of design software, including InDesign and Photoshop. - Experience working with large donors and NGO•s. - Ability to work with a varied number of colleagues from printers, procurement, ministry staff, USAID branding teams, US mission,
    Consultants, illustrators, designers, teachers, parents and pupils. - Ability to understand the context which printed material is used, for example a poster for a community sensitization versus an annual report for donor. - Organized and detail-oriented. - Ability to handle multiple projects at once. - Ability to meet tight deadlines and be flexible with working hours. - Excellent English written and verbal communication skills - Demonstrated flexibility, adaptability and the ability to perform and collaborate under challenging conditions. - Strong planning, community mobilization and inter-cultural communication skills required.
